DAVIDSON COUNTY - A freak accident left one person dead in Davidson County. The car overturned into a creek after running of the road.
Police officers said they are not sure what caused the accident.
“A car traveling west on Hampton Road, ran off the left side of the road, ran through a fence, over the embankment and landed upside down in muddy creek,” said NC Highway Patrol Sgt. Ben Stalvey.
The call came in shortly after 10 a.m. Rescue crews responded with heavy equipment. Officers say the placement of the car made it hard to get the victim out.
“Davidson County Sheriff's department Dive Team went down and confirmed there was a body in the car. But due to the instability of the car we had to wait for it to get up on the bank before they could get the person out,” said Stalvey.
Now authorities are working to determine whether a medical issue or the rain played a role in the accident.
“The body will be sent to Chapel Hill to see if it was a medical condition which may have caused her to run off the road. Or she may have died because of drowning, we don't know yet,” said Stalvey.
There is currently no word on an identity of the victim.
