REIDSVILLE, N.C. – A weekend raid nets the Rockingham County Sheriff's Office hundreds of pounds of pot and hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash.
Authorities also said the two suspects in custody – Jose Gomez, 26, and Antonio Nunez, 30 – are in the country illegally.
Rockingham County investigators and Guilford County narcotics officers seized more than 1,000 pounds of marijuana, $600,000 in cash and an AR-15 assault rifle.
Since 2003, one of the two men had been arrested three times and the other man had been previously deported.
Sheriff Sam Page said the increase in major drug crimes in the area is, in part, due to North Carolina's vast highway system that connects Mexico with other part of the United States.
“That same weapon could have been used against those Greensboro detectives and my officers, when they were doing their jobs,” said Page. “Is it getting more dangerous? Sure. When you start seeing that kind of firepower, that type of weapon system, yes, we are seeing more weapons when we do these seizures.”
It was a very large drug bust, but not the first of its kind in Rockingham County. Just a month ago, authorities seized more than 1,100 pounds of drugs, several cars and arrested three men who were in the country illegally.
Gomez and Nunez are in the Rockingham County Jail, under detain orders from U.S. Immigration. They both are also under a $1 million bond.
