BELMONT, N.C. -- Belmont Abbey College officials say they're willing to pay fines and even close its doors if the government doesn't back down.
The school filed suit against several government agencies over a new federal mandate that will require organizations to provide contraceptive coverage under their health care plan.
The suit was filled earlier this month. The list of defendants are the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, U.S. Department of Labor, U.S. Department of Treasury, and those secretaries.
Belmont Abbey President Dr. William Thierfelder says the health care mandate is a violation of their constitutional rights and religious values.
“This is a much bigger case and this effects every American," said Thiefelder. "In other words, if they can do this to us, they can do this to everybody."
Thierfelder says the school doesn't intend to comply with the mandate. Because of the noncompliance, he says the school would receive reoccurring fines which could cause the school to close.
