ROCKWELL, N.C. – Neighbors say the trash in the yard was overwhelming and they were concerned about the animals. A complaint to animal control prompted an investigation by the Rowan County Sheriff's Office.
Investigators arrested Angela and David Lore Jr., who lived at the Rockwell Road home. The couple was charged with three counts of animal cruelty, four counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and four counts of child abuse.
Detectives said four children, ages 16, 14, 9 and 7 were alone in the home for long periods of time. News 14 Carolina learned David Lore registered a home school with the state called "Rock Olive Academy."
The Lores owned one of two businesses that survived the September fire at Webb Road Flea Market. Since then, they opened their own pet store on South Main Street in Salisbury.
"He had a lot of customers that came back regularly," said friend Amy Hevener who stopped by Pet Place Thursday to check on the animals. "To me, they took good care of their animals. To me, you can't pass judgment on them because you do not know the whole story."
The four children are in foster care, three dogs were rescued by animal control and the Lores are under a $250,000 bond.
