RALEIGH -- Wake County, Durham, Chapel Hill-Carrboro, Vance, Orange, Franklin and Granville county schools closed Thursday because of inclement weather. Snow and wintry mix hit the Triangle just as the morning commute began.

In a statement released around 5:30 a.m., Wake County school officials said in order to minimize the impact on families, traditional calendar students will make up the day on Jan. 3. Year-round calendar students will make up the day later in January.

Thursday is an optional teacher work day for Chapel Hill-Carrboro staff.

Meanwhile, several other school districts are operating on a two-hour delay. They include Cumberland, Johnston, Chatham, Harnett, Hoke, Moore, Robeson, Wayne and Wilson county schools.
